“Thank you for coming, Artie. I know it’s an inconvenience, but—”

“And inconvenience?” Artie raged. “You shot Ben.”

“A flesh wound. He’ll be fine. He has an annoying knack of turning up where he’s not wanted and interfering with plans set in motion decades ago. And we need your help to see them to fruition.”

“So let’s see if I understand this. You had your son murdered. One of your minions killed my grandmother, and then one of my friends. Plus, you shot Ben. And you think I’m going to help you?”

James huffed a breath. “Let’s see if I can make you understand. Your grandmother took something very valuable from you. It contains more power than you can imagine. It’s the key to your power. Surely you’ve noticed by now that you’ve gotten stronger.”

He had noticed. The episode with Ben where they shared telepathic contact had frightened and invigorated Artie. He’d never guessed that there would be more to his powers than psychometry.

“That bit of you that your grandmother stole contained a great deal of psychic energy. The demons wanted to claim it for their own, and use it to garner strength, making themselves strong enough to quash any rebellion. But your grandmother took that from them.

“After the Revelation, we found out about you. Originally it was determined that your power would allow us to purge the paranormal creatures from New Orleans, keep it pure for humans, but that spark turned out to be missing. When the demons came to us, telling us it would be returned to you, we attempted to wrest you from them with demons in our employ, but that proved fruitless, thanks to Ben.

“Now you’re in possession of your abilities, even if you’ve yet to master them. Power radiates from you, and that power will save thousands of lives if you give it willingly. We’ll take it by force if we have to, but that would leave you a drained husk. Give us what we need, and you’ll be a hero. You alone will be responsible for saving mankind.”

Artie paused for a moment, then he did the only thing he could. He threw his head back and laughed.
